Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Moises Caicedo since the summer and now a new update has emerged from a reliable source on the club's pursuit of the player.

What's the latest?

CBS reporter Ben Jacobs took to Twitter after Liverpool and Chelsea's Premier League clash on Saturday to offer an update on the two club's stance on the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder.

Jacobs tweeted: "The irony of that 0-0 is it showed how both sides need a player like Moises Caicedo.

"Chelsea the only ones pushing right now with #LFC viewing Brighton's January valuation as too high."

An "incredible" signing

Despite Liverpool looking unwilling to meet Brighton's transfer valuation of a reported £75m for Caicedo, there is no doubt that he could make a huge difference at Anfield in the centre of the pitch.

The Reds are currently eighth in the Premier League table after 19 uninspiring outings and yesterday's clash with Chelsea continued to highlight the disconnect between the centre of the pitch and the attacking threat in the team.

Liverpool lost possession 163 times during the match, with both Stefan Bajcetic and Naby Keita having fewer touches of the ball than Alisson Becker throughout, proving that there is a lack of presence in the centre of the pitch after tallying up less possession (48%) than their opponents at Anfield.

In fact, ball retention in general has worsened for the Merseysiders during the current campaign with an average of 59.9% possession and possession lost 155.8 times per game so far, whilst last season they averaged 63.2% possession and possession lost just 149.7 times per game.

As a result, the signing of the Ecuadorian international could considerably improve the presence needed and defensive consistency Liverpool are crying out for at the moment.

Over 17 Premier League appearances this season, the "incredible" 21-year-old - who was hailed a "serious talent" by Aden-Jay Wood - has scored one goal, registered one assist and tallied up an 88% pass completion rate so far, as well as averaging 73.4 touches, 52.5 accurate passes, 2.9 tackles and 5.4 duels won per game.

Indeed, FSG are renowned for their shrewd business to ensure they do not pay over the odds for players who join the successful squad, however, in desperate times that Liverpool have found themselves in, getting a midfield rebuild started during the remainder of the transfer window could make a huge difference over the second half of the season.

With that being said, the powers at Anfield must sanction a move for Caicedo in an effort to only avoid Chelsea sealing a deal for the player this month but also to bring their team back to life and inspire one of the club's famous comebacks once again in the Premier League.
