Liverpool could seemingly emerge as a potential destination for RB Leipzig sensation, Josko Gvardiol, with the Croatian international having caught the eye as a result of his displays for both club and country of late.

While Premier League rivals Chelsea - as well as La Liga giants Real Madrid - have been tipped to make a move for the 20-year-old of late, Jurgen Klopp and co could well have been handed a notable incentive to make a move of their own.

That is following the centre-back's recent admission that the Anfield outfit would seemingly be his "dream club", having followed the Merseysiders as a child.

The 19-cap colossus - who reportedly has a £110m release clause in his existing deal with the Bundesliga outfit - will have set tongues wagging among Reds supporters following those comments, with many hoping that the club now act to win the race for his signature.

Transfer insider Dean Jones - speaking to GIVEMESPORT - has now delivered his verdict on that possible swoop, with the respected journalist stating that Klopp's side could potentially become "contenders" in the battle to secure Gvardiol's services.

Jones stated: "Maybe they can become contenders. We should probably consider that it’s in Gvardiol’s interests to build up all the hype around him to make sure that there’s a tussle to sign him.

“I think from a club standpoint, they’ll be happy for that to be the case with Gvardiol at the moment whilst he stays where he is.”

The 6 foot 1 "warrior" - as lauded by one journalist - has undoubtedly warranted that interest having featured in all seven games for his country at the World Cup in Qatar, averaging 1.6 interceptions and 1.3 tackles per game throughout the tournament.

Despite the Zagreb-born brute's obvious talent - showcased by the fact that he also ranks in the top 1% for dribbles completed among those in his position in Europe - there may well be fears of history repeating itself as far as Liverpool are concerned.

The club were notably stung with their last high-profile capture from Leipzig in the form of Naby Keita, with the Guinean midfielder having been snapped up on a then club-record deal worth roughly £52.75m back in the summer of 2017.

Lauded as a player who had an "extremely rare" skillset prior to his arrival in England, in the words of former Brentford scout Ted Knutson, the playmaker was expected to make a major impact in English football, although has flattered to deceive since then.

The £120k-per-week man has scored just 11 goals and provided only seven assists in 122 appearances since officially joining the club in 2018, having routinely been ravaged by injury over the past four years or so.

Those woes have been laid bare by the fact that the 27-year-old has made only six outings across all fronts in the current campaign, with his future at Anfield now uncertain with just six months remaining on his existing deal.

Branded "hugely disappointing" and "simply not good enough" by Champions League-winning midfielder, Didi Hamann, it is safe to say that it has not been an entirely successful signing for all parties to date.

As such, were Klopp and co to splash the cash on another high-profile youngster from the German outfit in the form of Gvardiol, there may well be concerns that a similar scenario could occur.
