Liverpool are currently on their pre-season tour of Asia with many changes to the squad over this summer after making three new signings and letting go of eight players so far, but it remains to be seen whether the Reds will have any more incomings or outgoings this summer.
It has been heavily speculated as to whether Liverpool will make some midfielder signings this summer, with Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all out of contract in June 2023 it is an area of the squad the side are expected to strengthen.
Not only do they have midfielders in the last 12 months of their contracts, but both Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson are also well into their 30s, with Thiago failing to make more than 25 appearances in the Premier League per season since joining the Merseyside club due to injury issues.
As a result, there have been many midfield players linked to the club with Jude Bellingham, Adrien Rabiot and Nicolo Barella all linked to the club, and the latter could be one of the solutions in Klopp's need to strengthen the centre of the pitch.
Barella has been impressive over last season with his performances in the Serie A at Inter Milan, and as a result, has become a key player for the side.
The £77m talent scored three goals, delivered 12 assists and created a whopping 15 big chances, making 1.8 key passes and 1.8 tackles on average per game, as well as winning the majority of his duels (55%) and successfully completing the majority of his dribble attempts over 36 league appearances.
Jurgen Klopp could even land his very own Kevin De Bruyne with the signing of the Italian star, as the Manchester City midfielder was the third most comparable player to Barella over last season, according to FBref.
Although the Belgium international scored more goals (15) and had a better shot-on-target accuracy (40.3%), Barella was much more efficient in his passing with a better pass completion rate (83.5%), more successful in his pressures (29%) and delivered three more assists (11) than his positional peer.
The Liverpool manager lavished praise on Barella when his team met Inter Milan in the Champions League last season, and even dubbed the midfielder "top class" during his press conference:
"He's a really good player, a really good player and I like him a lot. He has all the things you want from a midfield player: he is aggressive, he is technical, he can run for ages and all these kinds of things. That's a top-class player."
With that being said, if FSG does decide to make the signing of a midfielder this summer Barella would be the perfect fit for the team and could make a great impact in the centre of the pitch next season.
