Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Marco Asensio this summer, and now there has been an update on the club's pursuit of the player.

What's the latest?

As per the report, Liverpool are now competing with Newcastle United for the signing of the Spanish winger and now Los Blancos have cut their asking price to £21m.

Imagine him & Nunez

Jurgen Klopp has lost a number of forwards in his squad over the last few weeks, with Divock Origi, Taki Minamino and Sadio Mane all making moves away from Anfield. As such, although the club has now signed Darwin Nunez, it would be advantageous to add more depth in attack.

Despite struggling for consistent game time at Real Madrid, Asensio has been a reliable and consistent player over the last seven years, scoring 49 goals and delivering 24 assists in 235 appearances - making a goal contribution every 167 minutes of football played.

The Spanish dynamo has won three La Liga titles, three Champions League trophies and two UEFA Super Cups during his time with the LaLiga giants, but now is clearly ready for a new challenge.

Asensio has been the recipient of high praise for his input at Real Madrid, with Los Blancos legend Guti claiming the player has an "unlimited ceiling" in an interview (via Daily Cannon):

“Asensio is a lot better player than I was. He has an unlimited ceiling, his head is very well furnished and will depend on what he wants to do in the world of football. The future is in his feet.”

The Liverpool manager could unlock an impressive goal-scoring partnership between Asensio and Anfield newcomer Nunez if FSG can secure a deal for the Spaniard this summer, which would certainly soften the blow of losing Mane ahead of next season.

With that being said, the Reds should take advantage of the cut-price transfer fee being asked for Asensio, as the player can add experience and use his winning mentality in the team to contribute to further success for Liverpool in the future.
