Liverpool have been linked with a move for Matheus Nunes throughout the transfer window, and now a new update has emerged on the club's pursuit of the player.

What's the latest?

According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha (via Paisley Gates), Liverpool are now preparing their offer for Sporting CP midfielder Nunes.

As per the report, the Merseyside giants are already aware of the price needed to complete a deal as the club already accepted an offer from Wolverhampton Wanderers for €50m (£42.2m), however, the player did not want to make the move to the Midlands club.

Darwin Nunez masterclass 2.0

This wouldn't be the first signing this summer that Liverpool have scouted from the Portuguese top tier with January signing Luiz Diaz arriving from Porto and new star striker, Darwin Nunez, joining the club on a record-breaking transfer deal worth up to £85m from Benfica.

Since his arrival, the goal-scorer has been impressing enormously, particularly inside the penalty area.

Nunez scored in both the Community Sheild victory on his competitive debut for Liverpool and then on his Premier League debut last weekend, when he came off the bench to replace Roberto Firmino, ended up scoring just 13 minutes later.

Now, the powers at Anfield can repeat their Nunez masterclass with the signing of another Nunes, this time in the shape of a midfield talent they have been scouting from the Liga Portugal.

It's evident that Portugal is the place to sign players from at the moment after the quick transitions of Luiz and Darwin so the Sporting gem could certainly do the same.

Jurgen Klopp's side are suffering somewhat of a midfield injury crisis at present with Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all sidelined with fitness issues for the foreseeable future, so it could now be a great opportunity for Liverpool to pounce on their second Portuguese target.

Thiago's presence on the pitch is one that Liverpool will struggle to replace with the Reds winning 88% of their Premier League games last season when Thiago started, however, that percentage dropped considerably to 62% when he didn’t start in the team.

Therefore, if they could sign a player who could fit into the role to cover the Spaniard during his absence, Liverpool could be a formidable force this season, one any team in any competition will struggle to compete with yet again.

Nunes who was dubbed as having the "perfect profile" for Liverpool by transfer insider Dean Jones, matched Thiago for pass completion rate in his own half (92%) last term, while taking 59.2 touches a match, delivering 39.2 accurate passes per game and completing 70% of his dribbles for Sporting CP over 33 league appearances last season. On top of that, he was also a threat offensively, scoring three goals.

With that being said, the signing of Nunes couldn't come at a more crucial time for FSG who will be hoping to conclude another Nunez-esque masterclass this summer.
