Considering Liverpool’s catastrophic injuries in defence this season, it’s been no surprise to see the Reds linked with a number of centre-backs dotted throughout Europe.
There’s already a lengthy list of candidates that could be set for a move to Anfield in the summer, the latest being Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona.
According to Mundo Deportivo (via The Express), Jurgen Klopp is keen on the Frenchman, with Michael Edwards reportedly ready to sign-off a deal for the defender.
However, considering his form and availability over the past few seasons, the Merseysiders ought to reconsider.
With Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip’s fitness problems over the 2020/21 season, the last thing that Liverpool would be needing is an injury-hit defender. That is exactly what Umtiti is.
Since his move to Barcelona from Lyon in 2016, the 31-cap defender has missed a number of matches through injury.
Despite playing 43 games in his first season at the Camp Nou, he has not matched that number since. As a matter of fact, he has only made 46 appearances over the last three campaigns, missing a total of 79 outings through injury or fitness issues.
Considering that he earns £212k per week with the Spanish giants, the Reds would be hard pushed to justify forking out those wages on a player who could well be restricted to the sidelines on regular occasions.
That is not to suggest that Umtiti isn’t a competent defender. The 27-year-old has played his role in two La Liga title triumphs, two Copas del Rey successes, as well as of course lifting the World Cup with France.
In fact, former Barcelona and Lyon defender Eric Abidal labelled him as “world-class” in his time in France.
Despite those positives, his injury record and considerable wages should be enough to put Liverpool and Edwards off signing Umtiti in the summer.
