Liverpool have been linked with yet another centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window – the latest name on the table being Ezequiel Garay.
The Argentine defender has been out of contract since the end of the 2019/20 season, with former employers Valencia electing not to extend his deal at the Mestalla.
Now, reports from Spain suggest that the Reds are interested in his services in a move that would be somewhat perplexing.
Since his release by Valencia, Garay has not played any football at all.
His last appearance was in a 1-0 win against Celta Vigo in February 2020, a game in which he suffered a cruciate ligament injury, effectively ending his time at the Spanish outfit.
Should he arrive at Anfield, then he would, of course, be going through the same recovery process as the likes of Virgil van Dijk and it would thus take some time for him to regain his match fitness considering his break away from the game.
Not only that, however, but at the age of 34, the 32-cap Argentina international would need a period of adaptation to the Premier League having never ventured into English football before.
This would make his potential signing somewhat mystifying considering that The Reds need a defender to make an instant impact in their squad.
Of course, Garay would bring plenty of experience and pedigree having represented the likes of Real Madrid, Benfica, Zenit St Petersburg and of course Valencia.
He would also save The Reds a considerable amount of money being available on a free transfer.
However, despite Michael Edwards having developed a reputation for finding bargains, Garay is certainly one that he should veer away from.
