Liverpool are interested in signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez and have made an approach to his representatives.

What's the Word?

That's according to journalist Pete O'Rourke, who told The Football Terrace:

"I had a quick word with one of [Saul's] representatives and they’ve said that there is interest there from Liverpool but also rival interest from other Premier League clubs."

The Reds are in the market for a midfielder to come in and replace Gini Wijnaldum, who signed for Paris Saint-Germain after his contract at Anfield expired, and Saul looks to be the man they want.

Saul lost his place as an ever-present in Diego Simeone’s side last season, with just 22 of his 33 La Liga appearances coming as starts as Atleti recaptured the La Liga title. For context, he started in 35 of his 35 league games the year prior.

Saul has been linked with a move to the Premier League for a while with former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand singing his praises last year. He said during an Instagram Live video (as reported by Sports Mole):

"What a player. I've been harping on about Saul Niguez for a few years now. I think he's a major player. Composed, calm, great left foot, lovely conductor, he can score goals, tactically he's very aware."

Edwards must deliver

Given that he’s no longer a mainstay in their team, Atletico, who, like all clubs in Europe, are feeling the financial effects of the pandemic, may be happy to let him move on as he’s under contract until 2026, and as such, Michael Edwards must act quickly to get a deal done.

As O'Rourke said, other teams, such as Chelsea, are also keeping tabs on the Spanish international, so there's no time to waste for Liverpool.

The Reds need a high-class, experienced midfielder to come in to replace Wijnaldum and that's exactly what Saul is. He has experience of winning league titles and competing in the latter stages of the Champions League, making him an ideal man to come in and fill the gap left by the departed Dutchman.

Given his pedigree, experience and the desperate need that their side has for a new midfielder, Liverpool fans will be absolutely buzzing if Saul arrives at Anfield this summer. Edwards needs to make it happen.
