Verdict on Gini Wijnaldum’s Liverpool future a stark reminder for Klopp

Liverpool are still no closer to convincing Gini Wijnaldum to sign a new contract and may have to accept that his fate will lie elsewhere next season.

The Netherlands international has been in constant talks with the Merseyside outfit over potential new terms, but nothing has materialised as of yet. There was also strong links to Barcelona after Ronald Koeman identified Wijnaldum as a key summer signing.

Should Liverpool keep or sell Gini Wijnaldum?

Michael Brown believes that the 29-year-old will receive a flurry of offers from other clubs amid Liverpool’s desperate attempts to tie him down.

Potential end to the Wijnaldum era

Wijnaldum signed for Liverpool four years ago and has helped his side win their sixth Champions League trophy as well as their first league title in 30 years. However, despite the emphatic wins and his loyal devotion, the sun could be setting on his time at Anfield.

“They’ll all be interested in him, that’s a given,” Brown told Football Insider. “For what he gives that Liverpool side, that energy, those late runs. I’m sure there are options open.”

Barcelona could certainly reopen their interest in the Dutchman if he becomes a free agent next summer. As it stands, Wijnaldum has just eight months left on his current contract and unless a shock new deal is agreed, he could end his Liverpool career in the same fashion as Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne.

How much did Liverpool pay to sign Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg?

Transfermarkt currently value Wijnaldum at £36million, however due to the current financial climate, it looked unlikely Liverpool would even make £20million through a sale this summer. This would see the Reds take a loss on him after paying £25million for his signature back in 2016.

“You’ve seen the desire he’s played with over the last week. Even though it’s his last year he’ll be given everything,” Brown continued. “Liverpool will want to hold him down for sure.”

Indeed, Jurgen Klopp and Co are eager to see the Dutchman stay and will continue to do what they can to convince him to do so. But his mind may already be made up and he could be setting his sights on pastures new.
