Liverpool are targeting the signing of Benfica star striker Darwin Nunez this summer.

What's the story?

The Reds are interested in signing Nunez and although he has a release clause in his contract worth £125m, according to journalist Jacque Talbot, the deal could be completed if the club were offered just £66m.

He has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs, and it's unsurprising Liverpool are in the picture having already captured Luis Díaz from the Primeira Liga in January.

With Liverpool's front three getting older, Klopp has been thinking about how to refresh it and Nunez could be the next forward to come in.

He's an upgrade on Firmino

One of Liverpool's famed front three who he would be competing with is Roberto Firmino. He's been key to the club's success under Klopp but has recently been overlooked with Diogo Jota preferred.

Signing Nunez could finally spell the end to Firmino's time on Merseyside and it will no doubt be hard for some fans to swallow. Of course there's always going to be nostalgia there with him, but Klopp does at some point have to start planning for life after the 30-year-old.

The Benfica star, who has been dubbed "special", could be his perfect successor. Over the past year he has ranked in the top 1% for expected non-penalty goals amongst his positional peers in Europe's top five leagues. Firmino ranks outside the top 10%.

His shots on target per 90 minutes is also more than double the Brazilian's so it's no surprise to see him called a "monster."

The 22-year-old also leads the way as the top scorer in the league with 24 goals in as many appearances. With a record like that it won't be long before he gets a big move.

And with the Reds fighting hard to win every club competition, why wouldn't he want to choose them over everyone else.

Benfica are currently facing Liverpool in the quarter-final of the Champions League, and in the first-leg Nunez scored despite his team losing 3-1.

When asked about facing the Reds he said he was "not afraid" and that he wasn't happy that he scored because what he wants is to "win titles".

He impressed in the game winning four aerial duals and completing two key passes.

If Klopp really wants to make the Uruguayan his first signing of the summer, then he will have to move fast.
