Formed in 1874, the club was originally known as Macclesfield FC, before being renamed Macclesfield Town in 1946 – becoming founder members of the Northern Premier League in 1968. In the first two years of the Northern Premier League, the Silkmen lifted the title on both occasions while also winning the 1970 FA Trophy. After they won their third Northern Premier League title in 1987/88, they were promoted to the Conference for the first time in their history.
In the 1993/94 campaign, the club finished top of the Conference but were refused promotion due to their stadium not meeting Football League requirements. In 1996 they won the FA Trophy for a second time and won the Conference again in the 1996/97 season, this time granted permission to be promoted.
Macclesfield gained promotion in their inaugural Football League campaign in the 1997/98 season but were immediately relegated the next season. Between 1999 and 2012, the club remained in the fourth tier of English football, losing a play-off semi-final in 2005 before being relegated back to the Conference.
Since then, the club have been under serious financial restraints. However, manager John Askey led the Silkmen back into the Football League in 2018.
