Manchester City could go top of the Premier League with a win against Aston Villa on Wednesday night, having won their last five fixtures in the top-flight.
Pep Guardiola’s side thrashed Crystal Palace at the weekend and now have the opportunity to overtake Leicester City at the top of the league with three points against Dean Smith’s side.
However, it has been an impressive start to the season from the Villans, and they could provide a much sterner test than Palace did at the weekend, so Guardiola may have to go with his strongest available side if he wants to secure another victory on Wednesday evening.
Here’s how Football FanCast expects the Spanish manager to line his side up against Villa, with four changes from the side that beat Palace…
Ederson keeps his place in goal after returning to the first-team recently, although Zack Steffen has shown he can be a reliable back up in Guardiola’s squad.
There’s one change in defence, as Joao Cancelo returns to the starting line up after being rested against Palace, and he replaces Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back.
Ruben Dias and John Stones should continue their partnership at centre-back for this game, although Guardiola has suggested that Aymeric Laporte is close to a return, so perhaps we will see some more rotation in defence in upcoming fixtures.
There’s one change in midfield as Rodri comes in for Fernandinho, with the Brazilian perhaps unlikely to feature again having played at the weekend.
In attack, Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus drop to the bench, which allows Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden to return to the starting team and they can interchange with Raheem Sterling in the front three.
Earlier this season, Micah Richards was full of praise for Foden, saying:
“He’s an incredible talent but he deserves to be playing every single game.”
Therefore, after his impressive recent performances, the youngster deserves to start against Villa, in what is another important game for the Citizens at the Etihad on Wednesday.
