After Ruben Dias' new contract was announced earlier this week, Manchester City look set to extend the deal of another key player in Ederson.

What's the word?

According to The Times, the Brazilian shot-stopper and his agent Jorge Mendes have agreed to a new deal at the Etihad, with City keen to reward him for his superb performances in recent years.

Although the former Benfica man still has four years to run on his current deal with Manchester City, a new deal is likely to be similar to Dias' in that it ensures that the 28-year-old remains at the Eithad for the significant future and means that City can demand a huge fee should another side come knocking.

A big boost for Guardiola?

Since signing from Benfica in a deal worth £35m in 2017, Ederson has established himself as one of the world's best goalkeepers, making 195 appearances, in which he has conceded just 145 goals and kept 97 clean sheets.

In his four years at the Etihad, the Brazil international has won the Premier League three times, the League Cup four times and the FA Cup once, whilst he has also won the golden glove in each of the last two seasons.

It is not just his ability as a shot-stopper that marks him out as a key player in Guardiola's side but also his skill on the ball, with the 'keeper regularly venturing outside the box to provide City with an extra man when keeping possession, whilst he is also more than capable of kicking it long, as evidenced by City's first goal in the 2-0 win against PSG last season.

Guardiola is certainly a big fan of the £45m-rated 'keeper and rates him highly compared with some of the other world-class goalkeepers he has worked with, as he said last season:

"With his feet, he is the best. The quality of the pass, I would say, is the best.

"Manuel [Neuer] and Víctor [Valdes] were incredible too but the quality of the pass is the best. I would not say who is the best [overall] because I had success in the past with incredible keepers in Victor, Manuel and Eddie. He has credit from the manager, backroom staff and players. He's outstanding and he knows it."

Therefore, Guardiola will obviously be delighted if Ederson does sign a new deal, as it can only be good news if City are able to keep someone of his quality at the club for as long as possible.
