One of those players is Ilkay Gundogan, who has 257 appearances for the Citizens under his belt as well as 51 goals and 33 assists.
Should the 31-year-old find himself leaving the Manchester club at the end of the season and doesn’t end up putting pen to paper on a new deal before then, the remaining days of the current summer transfer window could give the Premier League champions and their manager the ideal time to bring in a potential long-term heir for Gundogan.
One figure that has been mentioned with a move to the Etihad Stadium that could fit this particular bill is Olympique Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta.
With 80 appearances for the French club to his name, the 24-year-old has scored 21 goals and provided 14 assists along the way, showing, just like Gundogan, how useful he can be when it comes to scoring a setting up goals from midfield.
To compare the midfield duo from their previous domestic campaigns, both players managed to reach double figures for goal contributions with the City star racking up eight goals and four assists, and the Brazilian having nine goals and six assists.
Additionally, the two midfielders managed to rack up an almost identical number of carries that entered the final third of the pitch (47 vs 48), as well as their rate of assists per 90 minutes (0.19 vs 0.20).
This highlights just how deadly the duo are when it comes to taking the ball into attacking areas and setting up goalscoring opportunities.
Lauded as an “extraordinary” player by his manager Peter Bosz, Paqueta certainly showed during his last league campaign in France that he not only has the credentials to play in Guardiola’s side, but also act as an ideal long-term heir for Gundogan.
Moving forward, if the Citizens feel a swoop for the Lyon star would be a good business move for them, they may have to work quickly to make it a reality, as fellow Premier League side, West Ham United have reportedly sent a bid of €40m (£34m) to snap him up.
