Manchester City: Guardiola’s side linked with James Maddison

Manchester City have been linked with a move for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison recently and he could prove to be Pep Guardiola’s next Kevin De Bruyne if he makes the move to the Etihad this summer.

What’s the word?

According to reports from Spain, via the Express, Chelsea and Manchester City are set to battle it out for Maddison this summer, as he continues to impress with the Foxes.

Although the 24-year-old is contracted with Brendan Rodgers’ side until 2024, it suggests that a move away could soon be on the cards, despite Leicester’s FA Cup win and current top-four position in the Premier League.

Would he be a good signing?

Maddison has been one of the top performers in Leicester’s side since joining from Norwich City in 2018, making 116 appearances and contributing 27 goals and 20 assists.

This season has been his best in a Leicester shirt, as he has eight goals and seven assists in 29 Premier League appearances, so has clearly been a big part of the Foxes’ impressive campaign thus far.

Could Maddison be City's next De Bruyne?

No

At just 24-years-old, the £54m-rated midfielder still has a lot of time to improve, and he could even be the long-term heir to De Bruyne in Guardiola’s side.

WhoScored suggests that both Maddison and De Bruyne’s main strengths include long shots, set-pieces and key passes, which certainly suggests that the Leicester City man could play a similar role to the Belgian in Guardiola’s side in the future.

Although the former Wolfsburg man is only 29, so still has a few years left at the top, the idea of Maddison and De Bruyne in the same midfield is surely a mouthwatering prospect for City fans, and it would ensure that the England international could learn from De Bruyne before eventually succeeding him at the Etihad.

Earlier in the season, Rodgers was full of praise for Maddison after an impressive performance against Fulham, saying:

“He’s got immense quality, the cross that comes in, if it was Kevin De Bruyne everyone would be talking about it, an unbelievable cross.”

Therefore, it certainly seems as if Maddison would be an excellent addition to Guardiola’s side this summer, and there seems no reason why, if he develops well under the world-class management of Guardiola, he couldn’t have a similar impact to De Bruyne at the Etihad, so sporting director Txiki Begiristain should definitely try to sign him.

And, in other news… Txiki could be set for huge mistake with £11m City beast yet to make his debut
