Manchester City have been linked with a move for Barcelona right-back Sergi Roberto recently and he could be a superb addition to Pep Guardiola's squad this summer.

According to Spanish news outlet Sport (via Sport Witness), City are in 'pole position' to sign the Spanish defender this summer should he decide to leave the Nou Camp.

He has just 12 months left on his deal with the Catalan club and, whilst he is committed to staying at Barcelona, the report suggests that he is 'seduced' by the idea of playing under Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium next season.

The report added that City tried to sign him last summer but he was keen to stay with the La Liga giants, but it is now in Barcelona's interests to sell him as they seek to ease their financial woes with a squad rebuild this summer.

The La Masia graduate has played under Guardiola at Barcelona before but was very young at the time, featuring in just seven games under the current City boss. However, he was able to score twice and set up another two goals in those appearances.

The Spain international has made 304 appearances for the first team during his time at Barcelona, contributing 10 goals and 36 assists, whilst he has also featured in a number of positions across the midfield and the defence, which would surely make him an attractive option for Guardiola this summer.

Former Barcelona boss Quique Setien was full of praise for Roberto last year, saying: "We have a player who is so versatile that he can play in any position we might ask him to. He can play perfectly at any position.

"Having this type of players makes things easier because you never know where you may need him." Therefore, Roberto certainly seems like he would be a good fit at City next season, as he has plenty of experience as both a right-back and a central midfielder, whilst he can provide cover almost anywhere on the pitch. [freshpress-quiz id=“577936"] Given that Roberto is 29 and has just one year left on his contract, City would surely be able to bring him in for less than his current market value of £22.5m, which suggests that he could be a bargain option for sporting director Txiki Begiristain, who should definitely look at bringing him to the Etihad this summer.
