Manchester City have reportedly offered €100m (£85m) to sign RB Leipzig's Josko Gvardiol, and the World Cup superstar could prove to be the next Vincent Kompany in Pep Guardiola's side.

According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, the Premier League champions are set to compete with Manchester United and Chelsea for the 20-year-old and have already submitted an eye-watering bid as they look to secure one of the top young defenders in world football.

If Gvardiol wasn't already known to Europe's elite before the World Cup, he will certainly be top of numerous manager's Christmas lists after his dominant displays in Qatar for Croatia, with whom he reached the semi-finals before defeat against Argentina earlier this week.

In six appearances for Zlatko Dalic's side at the World Cup prior to today's third-place play-off, Gvardiol has earned an impressive 6.86 rating from WhoScored for his performances. He ranks first for interceptions and clearances out of everyone in Croatia's squad, which emphasises how important he was in their run to the final four.

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor was full of praise for the former Dinamo Zagreb man's performances in Qatar, tweeting: "Hear me out but think Joško Gvardiol could be worth the eye-watering figures currently being quoted by RB Leipzig. Watched him very closely at World Cup & his reading of the game is exceptional. Still only 20. Man mountain & can also play with both feet. Top defender."

Should the Croatian complete a move to the Etihad Stadium next month, he could follow in the footsteps of City legend Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian defender joined the Citizens from Hamburg in 2008 when he was just 22 and was also regarded as one of the top young centre-backs in Europe.

He certainly lived up to that reputation in more than 10 years with the club, making 360 appearances for City and winning 12 domestic trophies in that time, as he became a big part of their evolution into one of the top teams in England, earning a place in the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Like Kompany did in his time at the Etihad, Gvardiol's FBRef report emphasises that he excels at passing and interceptions, which marks him out as a top modern defender.

If the Croatia international were to join Guardiola's side in 2023, he could easily play at centre-back for the next decade, so there seems no reason why he couldn't establish a legacy similar to Kompany's at Manchester City.
