The Citizens were not always big spenders but of course, everything changed when they got new owners and received a big cash influx that ended up putting the club on the board to play with the big boys of the Premier League. But still, it does feel like Guardiola has been spending a lot but not all on the same player as his money has been distributed across different positions.
And an even bigger surprise is that despite splashing the cash in recent years, their record signing is still that of Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg in 2015/16 for a sum of £68.4m. Of course, even for today’s standards, that is quite a big figure. The Belgian midfield maestro is then closely followed by Rodri from Atletico Madrid in 2019/20 for £63m and then, a year prior to that, Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City for £61m.
As far as big departures are concerned, 2019/20’s transfer of Danilo to Juventus for £33.3m still takes the cake as the most lucrative sale the Citizens have ever done. Interestingly enough, it was also a deal that saw Joao Cancelo go the other way for £58.5m, which ended up being Man City’s fourth most expensive signing as well.
Over the years, we’ve seen all kinds of players at the Etihad and needless to say, some of them are still considered as icons of both the club and the Premier League as a whole. But it’s also pretty safe to say that no transfer has shaped Man City’s modern history as much as Sergio Aguero’s arrival from Atletico Madrid for £36m back in 2011.
The Argentine striker ended up not only topping the charts at the club but also conquering the league with his constant supply of goals, including that famous one to win the Citizens the Premier League in the last moments of the campaign in 2012.
Apart from Kun, we also have to mention David Silva’s signing from Valencia in 2010, Vincent Kompany’s and Pablo Zabaleta’s in 2008 from Hamburger SV and Espanyol respectively, and of course, De Bruyne’s from Wolfsburg in 2015.
All in all, those are some big names that made it onto our list but there are even more players that are worth mentioning but couldn’t make the cut this time. Yaya Toure, Raheem Sterling, Carlos Tevez… The list just goes on.
