Man City: Juventus keen on Jesus

Manchester City could seal two super deals after a recent update on Juventus’ reported interest in Gabriel Jesus.

What’s the talk?

According to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus have shortlisted Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus as a potential transfer target should Cristiano Ronaldo leave the club this summer. If Ronaldo decides to depart from Turin, Juventus will pursue deals for Dusan Vlahovic, Mauro Icardi and Jesus in order to strengthen their attacking options ahead of next season.

The report claims that Juventus have been tracking Jesus for a number of years and have not had the opportunity to make a move for the Brazil international. However, the door could open this summer as Manchester City’s pursuit of Harry Kane could lead to Jesus being put on the market. La Gazzetta dello Sport posit that the England captain’s prospect €160m transfer to City could allow Juventus to pounce on Jesus.

Should City sell Jesus?

Txiki masterclass

This could end up being a masterclass from Manchester City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain if he can get both of the aforementioned deals over the line this summer. Capitalising on Juventus’s interest in the underperforming Jesus and signing the exceptional Kane could provide a huge boost to Pep Guardiola’s squad as they go in search of the elusive Champions League trophy.

The £90k-per-week forward, Jesus, struggled to kick on after scoring 14 Premier League goals during the 2019/20 campaign. He ended the season just gone with nine league strikes, with five more in the cup competitions. Guardiola’s decision to deploy Kevin de Bruyne as a striker and as a false nine at times highlights his lack of faith in Jesus in the big games, as the Spanish boss seemingly believed that his team was better off with a midfielder up front rather than his number nine.

Can you name this obscure former Man City player?

Kane, on the other end, is a completely different prospect. In his seven full seasons since breaking through into the first team at Spurs, he has scored 17 goals or more in the Premier League. Kane picked up the Golden Boot and the Playmaker award for the 2020/21 campaign, as he found the back of the net 23 times and set up his teammates for 14 goals.

This shows that Kane is a far superior striker to Jesus at Premier League level and that his arrival at The Etihad could be a huge boost for Guardiola. Therefore, Bergiristain selling Jesus to Juventus and recouping some of the money potentially paid to Tottenham for Kane could be a stupendous bit of work in the summer transfer window.

It must be stressed that there are a lot of moving parts in this story. Firstly, Ronaldo has to decide to leave Juventus and then facilitate a transfer away from the club, whilst City would also need to negotiate a deal with Tottenham to sign Kane. Only after both of these situations arise can Juventus then swoop for Jesus, so do not expect this to all happen quickly!

However, if all the cards fall into place, this could turn into a transfer masterclass by Begiristain.
