Txiki Begiristain is heading for a disaster over “complete” Manchester City forward Lukas Nmecha.

What's the talk?

According to German outlet Sport Bild, City have decided that they will sell centre-forward Lukas Nmecha in the summer transfer window. The report claims that City are ready to cash in on the German under-21 international following his impressive season out on loan to Vincent Kompany's Anderlecht in Belgium.

Bild do not name any clubs that are interested in Nmecha and it remains to be seen whether or not Anderlecht would be able to facilitate a permanent transfer for the forward.

Kompany hailed Nmecha as a “complete” striker and admitted that the German attacker does not have any glaring weaknesses in his game. He told HLN, as transcribed by MEN:

“Of course, he still has room for improvement, but actually he is already a quite complete striker. He does not have any noticeable weaknesses.

“At the moment he is already one of the best strikers in Belgium."

Heading for disaster

Begiristain and Pep Guardiola are heading for a disaster with this decision. They could be about to lose a talented player who just had his breakthrough season in senior football without giving him a chance to stake a claim for his place in Guardiola's squad.

Nmecha scored 21 goals on loan to Anderlecht this season and won the Golden Boot at the Under-21 European Championships for Germany.

Interestingly, Nmecha has scored vital goals to win major trophies for England and Germany at youth level. Nmecha scored the crucial goals in the semi-final and final of England's Under-19 European Championship success in 2017. He then went on to score the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Under-21 European Championships for Germany this summer after switching his national allegiance.

This shows that he has what it takes to perform in big moments as he has proven it on several occasions. He has not been fazed by playing in finals for England or Germany and has stepped up to the plate when needed to provide important goals. Therefore, he could have the mentality it takes to succeed at City as he does not buckle when put under pressure.

The £16k-per-week dynamo deserves a shot in pre-season to show Guardiola exactly what he is capable of. If Guardiola gives him that opportunity and he fails to take it then City could look to move him on, but he should - at least - be given the chance to demonstrate the development he has gone through at Anderlecht.

City could be making a big mistake if this season has allowed the 22-year-old to move on to the next level and if he goes away from the club and becomes one of the top strikers in Europe, which would leave fans fuming as they could miss out on his talent.

With Sergio Aguero on his way out of the door, City fans may not take kindly to Nmecha being cast aside unless a top player comes in to replace the Argentine, but even if that does happen, it seems wrong to simply cast Nmecha aside without taking a good look at him.
