A major update has emerged on Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, and it could be a huge boost for Pep Guardiola.

What's the talk?

According to Sky Sports, the Premier League champions will not be selling the 30-year-old this summer. The report claims that City are content with Gundogan's contract situation and have not planned to hold any talks with the Germany international in the near future, with two years left on his current deal.

This comes after Spanish outlet Sport reported earlier this week that City could be open to doing business with Barcelona. The La Liga giants are interested in Gundogan and the report claimed that City may be willing to sell if the right offer came in, but Sky Sports have now rebuffed those claims.

Back in 2019, City manager Pep Guardiola hailed Gundogan as "exceptional" and claimed that he is one of the best players in Europe. The Spaniard told Goal.com: “He is such an intelligent player.

“That’s one of the qualities I appreciate the most, intelligence - the players who understand everything that happens during the game and solve it as quick as possible.

“He can play in many roles. He can play close to the box as the guy who scores the goals. He has that personality, especially in that position.

“As [a] holding midfielder, I didn’t expect he would be so consistent in that role, defending that position, but he is. He is an exceptional player. He is one of Europe’s best, in fact."

Fans will be buzzing

Manchester City fans must be buzzing with this news as it could have been a disaster for Txiki Begiristain and Guardiola if they allowed Gundogan to leave the club this summer.

The German had a fantastic 2020/21 campaign and proved that he can be one of the best players in Guardiola's squad. In seasons gone by, he has been a steady player, but he took his place among City's top performers this year with some stunning displays.

Gundogan averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.29 across 28 Premier League appearances and was City's top scorer in the division with 13 strikes, coming in as their fourth-best performer according to the website. His previous best WhoScored rating for a Premier League campaign was 7.10 and he averaged a score of below 7.00 in two of his first four seasons with the club.

This shows that he raised his game last season this year and that is why fans will surely be delighted that he is set to remain at the Etihad Stadium, as he could carry that form over to next season.

The £140,000-per-week star's continued presence at City will be a big boost to Guardiola. Gundogan provided a much-needed goal threat from midfield last term and Sergio Aguero's move to Barcelona could add an extra emphasis on the need for an attacking threat from central midfield.

Guardiola must be delighted that he will still be able to call upon Gundogan to chip in with goals next season as City attempt to compete for the Premier League and Champions League crowns.
