Manchester City ended their previous Premier League season with the joint-best defensive record in the division alongside Liverpool.

Both teams conceded just 26 goals, seven fewer than Chelsea in third place.

Focusing on Jurgen Klopp's side, one man in their squad who not only helped towards their defensive record but also chipped in at the other end of the pitch is left-back Andy Robertson.

With 29 league appearances to his name in 2021/22, the full-back scored three goals and provided ten assists for his team, in addition to racking up the second-highest number of blocks (43), third-highest number of clearances (58) and fourth-highest number of interceptions (49) at Anfield.

Now that the end of the summer transfer window is on the horizon, this period could see the Citizens secure a deal for someone who would be their own version of Robertson at the Etihad Stadium.

Earlier this month, journalist Christian Falk tweeted that Pep Guardiola's side are interested in signing Stuttgart left-back Borna Sosa, who has the Liverpool and Scotland defender included on a list of players similar to him according to FBRef.

Having made 83 appearances for his current club across all competitions, the 24-year-old has found the net three times and supplied 23 assists along the way, highlighting the attacking talent he has, much in a similar vein to Robertson, with the Scot supplying 53 in 226 outings for Liverpool.

As a result, their assist rate is fairly evenly matched, with the City target managing an assist every 3.6 matches to Robertson's 4.2.

In addition, Sosa racked up more crosses (136) in the league than any other player at the German club last term, whereas the Scotsman saw only Trent Alexander-Arnold (127) deliver more crosses than him (89) on Merseyside.

Hailed by his manager Pellegrino Matarazzo as a player with "enormous potential", the Croatian full-back could be an ideal addition to Guardiola's squad. They have not only seen Marc Cucurella join Chelsea after being linked with a move to City, but also witnessed Oleksandr Zinchenko leaving for Arsenal.

With the German club reportedly looking to pick up a fee of around €25m (£21m) for their defender, the Citizens should have no doubts over making a move to secure his signature, as he could be a very useful asset for Guardiola and add some strength and depth to that area of his squad.
