Anthony Martial is facing a race against time to be fit for Manchester United's showdown with Liverpool at Anfield after he appeared to suffer an injury in the 1-0 win at Burnley on Tuesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Martial remains a major injury doubt as they prepare to take on their Premier League rivals. Phil Jones and Brandon Williams have been ruled out before the game, while the United boss will also have to check on Nemanja Matic, who took a knock at Turf Moor.

Martial's 2019-20 season was marred by injuries after he suffered multiple setbacks, including a hamstring injury which ruled him out of action for several weeks.

However, he will be given every opportunity to prove his match fitness ahead of the Premier League clash with Liverpool, and is one of several players who will be assessed before taking on the reigning champions.

The 25-year-old has made 13 top-flight appearances so far this season and has two goals and four assists to show for his 11 starts, with United currently sitting at the top of the table at the halfway stage of the campaign.

The exact nature of the injury hasn't been made public, however, although The Mirror claimed that Martial seemed to tweak a hamstring, hence why he was substituted in the latter stages at Turf Moor.

"I'm going to give everyone another day," Solskjaer said. "Anthony is not out of it. The only ones certainly out are Brandon and Phil Jones, they're the two that definitely cannot make the game, a couple of others maybe doubts, but we're hoping, fingers crossed."

"Form goes out of the window when you play your rivals but our form gives us confidence, we're confident going into the game. We're the challengers, they're the champions, they've earned the right to be champions, we're challengers and hunters and you want something that they've had and they have."

Solskjaer now faces an anxious wait over Martial's late fitness test ahead of the trip to Anfield, with the 20-cap France international looking back to his best after a short dip in form - he has made 12 goal contributions across all competitions this season, more than Liverpool's Robert Firmino and Diogo Jota, via Transfermarkt.

The Frenchman has a pretty decent record for the Red Devils against Liverpool in the Premier League, having scored twice and supplied one assist in nine appearances in all competitions, whilst he is averaging 2.2 shots and 1.8 dribbles on average per game, showing an ability to cut inside and create space and opportunities to score goals, which could be key to unlocking a side that have conceded 21 times this season.

Should Martial be deemed unfit to face the Reds, Edinson Cavani could start up front for Solskjaer's side, although the Uruguayan himself has struggled with his fair share of injury problems this season.

It is also likely that Marcus Rashford may step in to replace Martial in the Frenchman's absence, which could cause the club legend a selection headache over his options out wide, as it's fair to say that Mason Greenwood almost looks completely out of form and lost for confidence at the moment, as he has missed several chances to score in recent months. In fact, he has failed to find the back of the net since the 3-1 win at West Ham last year.
