Carlton Palmer believes this is the season where Paul Pogba will prove his doubters wrong thanks to the balance of Manchester United's squad.

Pogba has come in for heavy criticism from many pundits since returning to Old Trafford for a then-world record fee from Juventus five years ago.

There were even suggestions that the 2018 World Cup winner could leave United over the summer, with French media outlet Le 10 Sport claiming his agent, Mino Raiola, had offered Pogba to arch-rivals Liverpool.

Although the midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his £290,000-per-week contract with the Red Devils, he has made an impressive start to the campaign.

Pogba, 28, notched four assists in the opening day thumping of Leeds United and followed it up with another in the stalemate at Southampton.

Palmer believes, following the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, Pogba is set to show why United were so keen to seal his return in 2016.

The former Premier League midfielder exclusively told Football FanCast: "The balance of the side has never been right for Paul Pogba.

"If United get the balance of the side right - defensively and that midfield solidity - and allow him to go and play, he will cause unseen amounts of trouble week in, week out because he can create and score.

"If you put Pogba in a good side, he is going to excel."
