Manchester United were outfoxed, outfought and even outplayed by Paris Saint-Germain on their own turf on Wednesday night, which has left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with his work cut out if his side are to secure their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Marcus Rashford levelled the score with his third goal in four games against the French champions, but Thomas Tuchel's side hit back after the break with a goal from Marquinhos, before Neymar tapped home in stoppage time.

You could pick many holes in Solskjaer's side, as several players were at fault for the sub-par performance, although arguably none more so than Fred, who endured a night to forget at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer is under increasing pressure as he failed to make the most of the opportunity to replace Fred and he was left to face the consequences of his actions when the Brazilian was subsequently sent off in the second half.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more likeable footballer than the Brazilian, but that doesn't excuse his disastrous display, which was rather uncharacteristic especially when you consider the fact he has been in such fine form in recent weeks.

The Red Devils signed Fred on a five-year deal from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018, and he has become a true fan favourite for his hard-working attitude, determination and of course his ball-playing ability.

However, WhoScored lists discipline as one of his weaknesses, and his antics against PSG will have done little to quash those concerns, as he appeared to headbutt Leandro Paredes before Rashford cancelled out Neymar's early opener.

The left-footed player's problems didn't stop there, either, as he was quite simply not in the game against the French giants at Old Trafford.

He lost five out of nine duels overall, whilst he committed four fouls, made just two tackles, and was dribbled past once, which suggests that he struggled defensively during the midweek defeat.

Per SofaScore, he was given a statistical score of 6 out of ten for his efforts, which was the lowest out of any other United player on the pitch, including the misfiring Anthony Martial, who missed an absolute sitter.

Valued at £15m via Transfermarkt, Fred has often received recognition for his work rate and ability to track back and break up attacks, but unfortunately he did very little to limit the damage, as he couldn't offer much assistance to Alex Telles on the left hand side.

Despite being deployed as a deep-lying defensive midfielder, he didn't make a single clearance or interception the entire time he was on the pitch, which is exactly what his role entails, and for that reason alone, Solskjaer must consider axing him from the starting line-up.

The Red Devils travel to West Ham to face their former boss David Moyes at the London Stadium in what is surely a must-win game for Solskjaer at this stage and Fred's indiscipline and lack of effort will be a huge cause for concern. If he isn't dropped, he could be overrun by the likes of Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen, with the former scoring three goals in his past seven games in the Premier League.
