According to The Sun, Manchester United are set to hand Daniel James a "huge" wage increase this summer.

What's the word?

The Wales international joined the Red Devils from Championship side Swansea in the summer transfer window last year, and has scored three goals and provided seven assists for his new team across all competitions.

Now, The Sun claim he is set to net a new deal that will see his existing wages of £35k-a-week go up to around £50k-a-week "in a huge show of faith by the club".

The report adds James was "promised uplifts to his contract if he managed to prove himself as a first-team regular at Old Trafford", and that he is "entitled to bonuses for goals and assists, along with trophies and Champions League qualification".

Another contract disaster

Having signed just last summer, it's incredible to think United are already looking to offer James fresh terms. And even more baffling considering that his electric form from earlier on in the season has tailed off immeasurably.

After scoring three times in his first four Premier League games for the Red Devils, the Welshman has yet to find the back of the net since in the top-flight, whilst his last assist in the top-flight came back in December 28 in a win over Burnley.

Giving him a pay rise would simply be another Ed Woodward mistake. It would show that he has learned nothing from the numerous lessons United have been taught about the entire contract situation - just look at the likes of Alexis Sanchez or Paul Pogba. The Red Devils should surely know by now that it has to be a case of performances dictating whether a player deserves a new deal or not.

And in these past few months, James has shown very little to prove that.

Meanwhile, Man Utd must end their interest in this Real Madrid star now.
