According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have triggered the one-year option in Nemanja Matic’s contract.
The Serbia international was linked with a move away from Old Trafford earlier this season, but appears to have turned things around.
His existing deal with the club was set to expire this summer, but the Red Devils have finally moved in their attempts to tie him down for a longer period.
On top of the one-year extension, it is further reported Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in discussions with Matic over a fresh contract too.
It was only a few months ago that Matic was being linked with a switch to the likes of La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.
But how quickly things change. And whilst the midfielder himself can take a lot of credit, Solskjaer’s own man-management skills in getting the best out of Matic once more should be roundly applauded too.
The Norwegian has transformed the midfielder into a powerhouse who is amongst the first names on the team-sheet for the Red Devils – he has started nine of the last ten games in the Premier League for the Manchester side.
The 31-year-old was on the fringes of the team earlier on in the season, with injuries also playing its part in his lack of game-time. For Solskjaer to then embrace Matic and put him in a position of immense responsibility in the middle of park was a major risk. After all, it looked for the world that the former Chelsea man was set for an exit, and his mind could have been elsewhere.
Instead, he has been rock solid in the engine room for United. His average match rating of 7.06 in the top-flight as per Whoscored, places him in the top ten amongst all players for the Red Devils – including above Fred. Solskjaer’s skills in inspiring a transformation in the 6 foot 4 ace is just a major piece of evidence for his quality man-management skills.
