Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat by Arsenal at Old Trafford in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 100th game in charge on Sunday afternoon.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's second-half penalty gave the Gunners their first Premier League away win over the Red Devils since 2006.

Paul Pogba admitted he made a "stupid mistake" after he fouled Hector Bellerin in the box to give away the penalty. But he was by no means the only player at fault for the poor performance.

Solskjaer decided to stick with the same diamond formation that had worked so well against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, although Bruno Fernandes was also largely anonymous, and they struggled to break down Mikel Arteta's well-drilled side.

Scott McTominay, who signed a new contract in the summer which will keep him at the club until 2025, arguably failed to justify the improved terms and conditions of his new deal. The 23-year-old was anchored at the base of the diamond but was overrun as he tried to screen the defence on multiple occasions.

SofaScore graded the Scotland international as one of the worst players on the pitch with a low 6.7 rating - he lost possession 12 times, committed a foul, couldn't complete a successful dribble attempt and failed to provide a single accurate cross all game.

McTominay, who currently earns wages worth £60,000-per-week, received a similar scathing assessment from Sky Sports, who gave him a rating of 5/10, whilst The Manchester Evening News gave him the same score, claiming he was "positioned at the base of the diamond but was a poor conduit between defence and attack and was swamped."

It was rather baffling to see the young Scotsman play the full ninety minutes considering his disappointing display. Quite why Solskjaer didn't decide to replace him at some point in the second half we will probably never understand.

The club legend quite clearly rates McTominay very highly indeed, as he has started three out of five games in the Premier League this season so far.

But Solskjaer isn't exactly short of midfield options, as he can call upon the likes of Donny van de Beek and Nemanja Matic as well - both of whom came off the bench against Arsenal. We would expect him to ring several changes when they travel to Istanbul Basaksehir FK in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
