Manchester United are now tracking the Monaco centre-back Axel Disasi this month as a potential replacement for Harry Maguire at Old Trafford.

What's the latest?

Erik ten Hag is believed to be looking to add to his defence this month despite reports suggesting Maguire will not be on his way out of the Theatre of Dreams in the coming weeks.

The Red Devils have made a positive return from the World Cup break with three consecutive victories which has seen them climb back into the Premier League's top four.

And it has now been claimed by Luke Edwards that United have opened talks over a proposed swoop for the 24-year-old Frenchman following the winter market opening over the weekend:

"I think this is definitely a transfer worth looking at. I think preliminary talks are very, very vague. I just think wherever maybe he is a player that Manchester United are interested in if Maguire indicates that he wants to go then they will sign his replacement. I think he'd be a very, very good replacement," Edwards said on the BBC Transfer Gossip podcast.

Ten Hag bringing change

Before Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford, Maguire had been a regular in the United starting XI with the Englishman even wearing the captain's armband.

However, since the Dutchman's appointment, Maguire's game time has quickly taken a hit with the England international only starting four times in the Premier League this season.

And even from the bench, it appears Ten Hag has put little trust in Maguire to come on and solidify his backline with Maguire only making it off the bench on three occasions.

Having brought in Lisandro Martinez from his former club, Ajax, over the summer and utilising the experience of Raphael Varane, it is difficult to see how Maguire will work his way into the side without an injury to either player.

And now, it appears as if Ten Hag is looking to improve his strength in depth by bringing in the young France international this month which could possibly edge Maguire nearer to an Old Trafford exit.

Disasi - hailed as a player with "huge potential" by a previous coach - appears to follow a similar pattern of what Ten Hag wants from his centre-backs with the 24-year-old - along with Martinez - providing more progressive passes and shot-creating actions per 90 than Maguire (via Fbref).

And even from a defensive stance, Disasi has averaged more tackles per game than Maguire has done and holds an impressive ariel duel win rate of 78.2% (via Fbref).

Maguire has been backed over a potential move away with Tottenham Hotspur a club who have suggested a suitable landing spot for the England centre-back.

It does seem as if Ten Hag is quickly looking to put his stamp on this United side and it does seem like Maguire may not be a part of his plans.
