Manchester United have been heavily linked with signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong so far this transfer window but it seems as if Erik ten Hag's side are makings steps in the right direction.

What's the word?

With Barcelona in dire financial straits, de Jong has long been touted as one man who could leave the Nou Camp this summer and Old Trafford is a logical destination, given the Dutchman's relationship with ten Hag.

Recent reports have suggested that Barcelona need to pay off de Jong's wages before a move to United can be completed, but it seems as if the Red Devils are making progress on the personal terms of the potential deal.

Journalist Manu Sainz confirmed on Twitter that:

"Frenkie de Jong's agent is in London to meet with Manchester United. Chelsea want him, but the player prefers the option of going to Old Trafford and working with Ten Hag."

Supporters will be buzzing

Given that there is Champions League football on offer at Stamford Bridge next season, United supporters may well have been concerned when the links to Thomas Tuchel's side first arose.

However, it looks as if the ten Hag factor is key for the 25-year-old midfielder, who made 59 appearances under the new United boss during his time at Ajax, playing a big part in the Eredivisie side's run to the Champions League final in the 2018/19 campaign.

With the season set to kick off in less than a month, United fans will surely be delighted to hear that talks with de Jong are progressing, as following the departures of Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard, midfield additions are a must at Old Trafford this summer.

De Jong was in impressive form for Barcelona last season, contributing three goals and three assists in 32 La Liga appearances, averaging a 6.91 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

The Netherlands international is regarded as one of the best passers of the ball in world football, emphasised by his superb pass accuracy in Spain's top-flight last season, so will undoubtedly be a strong addition as ten Hag looks to lead a revolution at Old Trafford, and supporters will now be desperate to see the deal completed.
