Manchester United are planning to offer Paul Pogba a new contract, one which would see him become the highest-paid player in the Premier League.

What's the story?

The France international's current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2022, meaning he could leave Old Trafford for free in just 12 months' time.

According to The Sun's Daniel Cutts, United will propose fresh terms worth £400,000-per-week over a five-year period to Pogba in an attempt to retain his services, a salary that would make him the league's top earner.

Solskjaer will be buzzing

The Red Devils are thought to be desperate to keep the World Cup-winning midfielder at the club for many years to come as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer attempts to return them to the summit of English football.

Last season was one of mixed feelings for the 20-time English champions. A second-place finish in the Premier League table indicated good progress, but the failure to win any silverware extended the club's longest trophy drought in over 30 years.

Despite a slow start to the campaign, Pogba put in a consistent string of impressive performances from the festive period onwards, eventually contributing a respectable six goals and nine assists in 42 appearances.

His top-class quality hasn't gone unnoticed by Solskjaer, who expressed his desire to keep the 28-year-old in Manchester earlier in the summer.

"We want the best players here, and the club knows what I want. I do not know how the dialogue goes, but if we are to fight for the best trophies, we must have the best players,” the Norwegian told TV2.

If Pogba puts pen to paper on the proposed bumper new terms, then he'd receive a significant pay rise on his present £290,000-per-week paycheck.

The astronomical new salary would also see him eclipse the earnings of teammate David de Gea, who is thought to take home £375,000 a week.

After much speculation over Pogba's future, it seems as though he could be set to remain at Old Trafford and commit his future to his boyhood club once again.

The former Juventus man is said to be enthused by the progress United are making on the pitch, while their efforts to sign superstar Jadon Sancho behind the scenes are also pleasing the 6 ft 2 dynamo.

News that the United hierarchy are making progress to secure Pogba's future will undoubtedly have Solskjaer buzzing as he plots a tilt at the title next season.
