Manchester United have suffered a potential injury blow ahead of their Premier League clash against fierce rivals Liverpool after it was revealed that key midfielder Bruno Fernandes is a major doubt for the match.

What's the word?

The Red Devils welcome Jurgen Klopp's charges to Old Trafford this afternoon hoping to build on their dramatic comeback victory over Atalanta in midweek.

However, they may have to do so without their highly influential midfield talisman after United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that the Portugal international is one of several doubts for this crucial encounter.

"It's still just Friday, the game's on Sunday, we'll give everyone time," the Norwegian said in Friday's press conference. "We might have the whole squad back fit, we might be two or three players down. Today we didn't have everyone (in training). Let's see Sunday...

"Yes, Bruno might be a doubt. But he's doing everything he can to be ready," revealed Solskjaer, and the bad news didn't end there for the Red Devils.

The manager continued: "Fred? At present, I can't say if he's going to be fit or not, but he'll give everything he can to be there for us."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be gutted

If Fernandes is ruled out of today's fixture with Liverpool, then Solskjaer will be gutted to be without the 27-year-old's services for such an important game.

In just 12 appearances for United this season, the creative talent has already bagged four goals and laid on a further six assists for his teammates, highlighting his importance to the side after a tremendous 2020/21 campaign in which he scored 28 goals and set up another 17.

His influence doesn't stop there. As per WhoScored, Fernandes has averaged 3.3 shots and 3.9 key passes per league game so far in 2021/22, placing him in the top three amongst his teammates for both metrics.

Therefore, Solskjaer will be desperately hoping that the former Sporting Lisbon ace makes a full recovery in time for the visit of Jurgen Klopp's men, providing United with the best possible chance of securing all three points.
