Manchester United got back to winning ways last night with a 4-2 victory over Aston Villa in the EFL Cup, gaining some revenge for their Premier League defeat to the same opposition at the weekend.

Erik ten Hag deployed Anthony Martial as his lone centre forward last night and although he scored, the Dutchman is looking at the transfer market to add a striker who could give his side an extra attacking dimension.

With Manchester City going out and signing Erling Haaland in the summer, who has been a revelation this season, netting 23 goals in just 17 matches, Ten Hag would surely love to have a striker of similar quality leading the line for the Red Devils.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are drawing up a shortlist of goalscoring targets and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is on it.

Osimhen can be United’s own Haaland

Like Haaland, the £91k-per-week Nigerian international is scoring goals for fun this season, netting nine goals in 13 matches, and this tally would be higher if an injury hadn’t ruled him out for six matches.

His recent goalscoring streak led Lawrence Baidoo to claim that “Osimhen isn’t slowing down anytime soon” and his form has been frightening.

If Ten Hag wants his own version of Haaland, then a move for the 23-year-old Serie A star makes sense, especially when the two are comparable via FBref’s similar player model.

Osimhen actually edges Haaland for total shots per match (4.67 to 4.56) although the Norwegian’s accuracy is slightly better, with 52.1% of his shots hitting the target compared to 31% for the Napoli forward.

Again, the duo are extremely similar when it comes to shot-creating actions, with the Nigerian generating 2.67 shot-creating actions per match compared to 2.47 for Haaland.

It's clear that the two players are among the most in-form strikers on the continent this season and in reality, for United to match their rivals City, they require a superstar akin to their Norwegian gem.

Osimhen has proven he can shine both domestically and in the Champions League, which should prompt Ten Hag into making a move for the player sooner rather than later.
