Manchester United are seemingly set to make an approach for PSV Eindhoven starlet, Cody Gakpo, in the January transfer window, with the Red Devils having previously been heavily linked with the Dutchman over the summer.

What's the word?

According to The Sun, the Premier League giants are 'set to launch' a move for the 23-year-old in the New Year, with the Eredivisie outfit said to be open to a sale for a fee of around £50m for their prize asset.

The report suggests that technical director John Murtough is eyeing a new attacking addition following the departure of veteran hotshot, Cristiano Ronaldo, with Gakpo seemingly set to ease the club's centre-forward woes due to his desire to be deployed through the middle.

The piece also adds that as the 13-cap gem - whose existing contract runs until 2026 - and Erik ten Hag share the same agent, it is believed that a deal can be wrapped up smoothly once the market re-opens next month.

The Old Trafford outfit had seemingly been keen on signing the 6 foot 4 marksman during the recent window, only to ultimately decide on the £85m capture of Brazilian gem, Antony, from Ajax.

Could be 'special'

The PSV sensation appears a man destined for life at the Theatre of Dreams due to his notable connections to the club at present, with the versatile forward coached by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis van Gaal at club level and international level, respectively, while also sharing the field with former United assets such as Daley Blind and Memphis Depay for his country - as well as Tyrell Malacia.

The hope will be that that group of Red Devils figures both past and present will be talking up the benefits of Gakpo making the move to Manchester, with the in-form menace a talent who could well blossom on the Old Trafford stage.

Described as "something special" by journalist Fabrizio Romano, the fleet-footed attacker has shown his class for the Netherlands at the World Cup over the past few weeks, netting three goals in just four tournament games thus far to help steer Oranje into the quarter-finals.

A player who is simply "flying" at present - in the words of Romano - the Eindhoven-born ace had gone into competition in Qatar off the back of a truly scintillating start to the season for his club, having already scored 13 goals and laid on 17 assists in just 24 games in all competitions.

That tally of 30 goal contributions is far greater than any member of Ten Hag's squad has achieved this season, with Marcus Rashford currently leading the way with only 11 goals and assists across all fronts.

Not just a mere one-season wonder, Gakpo also caught the attention last term after recording 36 goal contributions in just 47 games, while his total tally for his current side now stands at 55 goals and 50 assists in 159 games.

While there may be concern that much of that impact has come off the left flank - with United already having the likes of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Rashford to take on that role - it would be truly mouthwatering if he could replicate that form in a more central berth.

As such, the aforementioned Murtough must simply do all he can to get a deal secured sooner rather than later, as he could well be a special addition to their ranks.
