Manchester United are reportedly considering a shock move for Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann after letting the Catalan giants know of their ‘intention’ to make a proposal for the World Cup-winning star.

What's the story?

According to Spanish outlet TodoFichajes, the highly-rated 30-year-old could follow Lionel Messi out of the Camp Nou exit door as Barca look to desperately lower their wage bill.

The report states that Griezmann will be the 'next to leave Barcelona' and that United see a 'clear opportunity' to swoop for the France international, potentially securing his services in a cut-price deal.

Fans will surely be buzzing

News of Messi's exit shocked the footballing world, especially as Barcelona had previously agreed a new contract that would have kept him at his boyhood club until 2026.

However, they announced on Thursday that his deal could not be ratified and their situation is reportedly so bad that they are yet to officially register a number of their summer signings, including Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay.

With Griezmann now the highest earner on Barca's books, the club's hierarchy are thought to be keen on offloading the former Atletico Madrid ace, meaning an imminent exit could be on the cards.

Despite France being knocked out of Euro 2020 in the round of last 16, Griezmann put in several standout displays for Didier Deschamps’ men.

He scored one goal in four appearances for Les Bleus, providing 2.5 key passes per game – the highest tally amongst his teammates – and recording an impressive 7.17 WhoScored rating as a result.

Griezmann's impressive showing for his national side over the summer followed on from a highly respectable campaign for Barcelona.

In all competitions, he bagged 20 goals and provided a further 13 assists for the Catalan club, winning the Copa del Rey in the process, showcasing the £54 million-rated star’s world-class ability.

Therefore, news that United are plotting a move for Griezmann will surely have large sections of the club’s supporters buzzing. Former Red Devil Ander Herrera once described him as a “phenomenon” and his arrival at Old Trafford would provide a significant boost to Ole Gunnar Solsjaer’s ranks.
