Manchester United have been linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo recently and the Dutchman could represent a big upgrade on Marcus Rashford in Erik ten Hag's side.

Recent reports have claimed that Ten Hag is keen on adding the 23-year-old to his squad at Old Trafford, although the Red Devils could face competition from Arsenal and Leeds United for his potential £38m signature.

Gakpo enjoyed a superb 2021/22 season in the Eredivisie, contributing 12 goals and 13 assists in just 27 appearances, earning a superb 7.79 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

The new United boss will certainly be well aware of his talent, especially after the winger hit the winner against Ten Hag's Ajax side in the KNVB final last season.

Former Netherlands midfielder Theo Janssen was full of praise for Gakpo last season, saying:

“That boy (Gakpo) has everything. Fine feeling for the ball, a good through ball, dribbles and is strong between the lines.

“I really enjoy him. He is going to be an important player for the Orange squad."

If he were to make the move to Old Trafford, he would likely compete with Rashford for a starting spot in Ten Hag's side, and considering their respective form last season, Gakpo could quickly oust the academy graduate.

Last season saw the 24-year-old manage just four goals and two assists in the Premier League, averaging a shocking 6.35 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

The England international would average fewer shots (0.9 vs 3), fewer key passes (0.4 vs 2.5) and fewer dribbles (0.9 vs 4) than Gakpo last season, so it seems clear that the Netherlands international would, on current form at least, be a big upgrade on him in United's side.

Therefore, the Glazers should definitely consider a move for the 23-year-old winger this summer, as if his opening game performance against Brighton is anything to go by, Rashford could be in for another season of struggle in the Premier League, and attacking reinforcements are a must if United are to progress.
