Manchester United: Erik ten Hag interested in Marco Reus

Manchester United already secured two new signings this month, with Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst joining the Old Trafford side on loan until the end of the season.

This won’t be enough to satiate the supporters however and Erik ten Hag will be striving to further strengthen his squad before the transfer window shuts.

According to German journalist Christian Falk, writing for CaughtOffside, United ‘are an option’ for Borussia Dortmund player Marco Reus as he looks set to leave the club upon the expiration of his contract this summer.

Reus’ agent was present as the Red Devils defeated Manchester City last weekend and held a meeting with Ten Hag behind the scenes after the match, and the Dutchman ‘seemed to be interested’ in Reus.

Imagine him & Rashford

Reus has seen his career decimated by injury problems, resulting in him missing 147 matches during his spell at Dortmund and injuries have also seen him miss the 2014 and 2022 World Cup tournaments for Germany.

There is no doubt he has been one of the finest attacking midfielders on the continent when fit and at his peak, unfortunately, it just hasn’t happened as often as he would have liked.

Last season saw the 33-year-old at his very best, averaging a Sofascore rating of 7.18/10 across his 29 Bundesliga appearances and Stefan Bienkowski described one of his goals as an “incredible finish” proving he still has the ability to shine at the highest level.

The £185k-per-week star scored nine goals and grabbed 12 assists during 2021/2022, taking 1.8 shots per match, creating nine big chances, and making 1.8 key passes and Marcus Rashford could form an excellent duo with the German.

The United forward has been on fire recently, scoring eight goals since the domestic season resumed after Christmas, and having someone like Reus playing behind him could work wonders.

Rashford has mainly been operating on the left wing, but a move to a centre-forward role with the Dortmund playmaker creating chance after chance might be something that will intrigue Ten Hag, despite Reus’ advancing years.

Former Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer dubbed his former teammate a “world-class leader” during this time in Germany and there is no doubt that the United manager needs more leaders in his side.

It is a risk-free move, and if he manages to keep fit, he could challenge himself in the Premier League while also potentially lifting Rashford to new heights in the process.
