The current transfer window may still have a couple of weeks left to run, but Manchester United are already planning for the future, according to reports.

What's the story?

Erling Haaland is set to be one of the most sought-after stars next summer when his reported £70m release clause comes into force, and the Red Devils are expected to be amongst his suitors.

The Express states that United wanted to sign the highly-rated 21-year-old this term but opted to make his former Borussia Dortmund teammate Jadon Sancho their priority target instead.

However, when experienced campaigner Edinson Cavani departs after the 2021/22 campaign concludes, the Old Trafford outfit will launch a bid for Haaland in an attempt to bring the Norway international to English shores.

Solskjaer would love him

Dortmund's talismanic striker was described as a "phenomenon" by former BVB ace Michael Rummenigge in a recent interview with German outlet Sport1 before he went on praise the youngster even further.

"Haaland is an exceptional phenomenon. There is a player like that every 30 or 40 years. I don’t know what his career plans are, but for Dortmund, it’s great that he’s still wearing the black and yellow jersey this season," Rummenigge said.

“He is an absolute goal machine, his opponents only fly away to the right and left when he starts running. I’ve never seen anything like him at that age. The only drawback in his size is his headers. He doesn’t score enough goals. Otherwise, Haaland is a perfect player.”

And it's easy to understand why there is so much hype surrounding the Scandinavian beast. In just 62 appearances for Dortmund, Haaland has found the back of the net of 62 occasions, laying on a further 18 assists for his teammates.

A DFB-Pokal success last season was reward for his incredible efforts since arriving at the Signal Iduna Park back in January 2020, and big things are expected of the £141,000-per-week gem in the years to come.

United may feel confident of securing Haaland's services next summer due to the current man at the Old Trafford helm. Solskjaer was Haaland's manager during his stint at Molde, and the pair are believed to have a good relationship.

Only a few months ago, Solskjaer admitted he still talks to his compatriot, and the Red Devils boss would surely love to be reunited with the Dortmund ace one again.

Bringing Haaland to the red half of Manchester would also end years of suffering in the striker position for the 20-time English champions. Ever since Robin van Persie also single-handedly secured the club's last top-flight title in 2013, many have tried and failed to succeed the supremely talented Dutchman.

The likes of Romelu Lukaku and Radamel Falcao have come and gone since Van Persie's heroics, but Haaland certainly has the ability to pick up the mantle.

United fans would be absolutely buzzing with a move for the Norwegian.
