Manchester United have received a potentially significant boost in their attempts to convince Paul Pogba to commit his future to the club.

What's the story?

The 28-year-old midfielder has entered the final year of his contract with the Old Trafford outfit and has been heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain throughout the summer as a result.

However, according to a report from journalist Dominique Sevreac in French outlet La Parisien ( as relayed by the Daily Mail), PSG have tried to distance themselves from Pogba altogether in recent days, instead choosing to focus all of their resources on bringing Lionel Messi to the Parc des Princes.

Messi is a free agent after leaving Barcelona, and should he accept PSG's offer of a reported two-year contract worth £25 million a year after tax, then they will have no interest in acquiring Pogba's services in the current window.

Manchester United fans will be absolutely delighted

With Mauricio Pochettino's charges thought to be the only interested party in Pogba, it looks as though the World Cup-winning dynamo will be lining up for United next season.

That news will surely leave a large section of the club's supporters feeling absolutely delighted as the influential star has become a pivotal player for the Red Devils in recent years.

He made 42 appearances in all competitions for United last season, scoring six goals and providing nine assists, achieving a respectable 6.85 WhoScored rating in the process.

Although Pogba has often been a divisive figure since his arrival in a then world-record £89m deal, the ex-Juventus ace appeared to turn a corner in the second half of last season.

A string of consistently top-class performances beginning in the festive period played a key part in Ole Gunnar Solsjaer's side finishing in second place in the Premier League standings.

The signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and the imminent arrival of Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane have significantly strengthened United's ranks, and the fans will be hoping those additions will be enough to convince Pogba to put pen to paper on a new deal.

So far, he's only won the League Cup and Europa League since returning to English shores, but his club are finally building a squad capable of claiming football's major honours, and Pogba's departure would be a substantial blow in the quest to return to the sport's summit.

United fans will rightly be delighted to hear that PSG look unlikely to make a move for the French star.
