Manchester United have been handed a huge boost relating to the future of striker Edinson Cavani.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has suggested that the Uruguayan is “now open” to extending his stay in Manchester beyond the current season. The striker was set to depart at the end of the campaign, with a switch to Boca Juniors being mooted amidst his reported desire to leave Old Trafford after just one season.

However, with his now apparent change of heart, he is set to remain at the club – news which will surely be a huge boost to the Red Devils and their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Since arriving at Old Trafford on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, Cavani has been an inspirational figure.

The striker, who is paid £210,000 per week at the club, has scored 12 goals and provided five assists in all competitions this season. Only the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford can boast more direct goal contributions for United than Cavani this season.

He is in electric form at the moment having scored five goals and notched three assists in his last five appearances in all competitions – displays which saw him labelled as “brilliant” by Gary Lineker.

Of course, losing a player of such calibre would have been hugely damaging for the club. Cavani has been a key player as the Red Devils have all-but secured second in the Premier League table, whilst they also have one foot firmly in the Europa League final.

Indeed, should he have left, the club would likely have been forced into the transfer market to replace him.

However, with the 34-year-old now having seemingly decided on remaining in Manchester, there is no need for the Red Devils to invest in a new centre-forward; and should Cavani continue his great form into the 2021/22 season, Solskjaer will surely be delighted that the Uruguayan has seemingly opted to extend his stay in the Premier League.
