Manchester United are close to announcing their first signing, as a deal for Feyenoord’s Tyrell Malacia nears.
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who revealed the closing details of a move in an interview with GIVEMESPORT.
He had the following to say on the imminent confirmation: “Malacia is a done deal. We’re just waiting for the second part of the medical to take place on Monday and then it will be done, but everything is almost completed.”
The news comes with Man United now also on the verge of signing free agent Christian Eriksen after his exit from Brentford.
Finally it appears that the Red Devils will mark their first foray into the transfer market, which could spell the exit of one or both of Alex Telles and Luke Shaw.
Erik ten Hag will join up with his compatriot, as he continues his long-running pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.
Malacia enjoyed a fine season last year with Feyenoord, offering up five goal contributions across 32 games.
This kind of form has seen him earn an average SofaScore rating of 7.09, which outperforms both Shaw and Telles last season. He also has more goal contributions than both, who have three and four respectively.
Back when he was manager of Ajax, Ten Hag was in awe of the defender. He is videoed claiming “that kid at left-back is amazing” before telling his assistant to note him down.
In the modern era where full-backs a so focused on attacking, perhaps the new manager in the Old Trafford dugout will aim to solidify his team before adding the fluidity that a normal Ten Hag side possesses.
Whilst still showing that he can push forward, his solidity will be a welcome change to a United side that conceded 57 goals last season.
Supporters will be buzzing that finally their transfer deadlock has been broken, and will hope that this marks the start of plenty of transfer business this summer to fix what was the worst ever Premier League side in Manchester United history.
