Millwall are considering a move to bring Luke O'Nien to The Den this summer.

What's the talk?

That's according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that the Lions, as well as Luton Town, Middlesbrough and Preston North End, are keeping a very close eye on the Sunderland midfielder ahead of a potential move in the upcoming transfer window.

The £135k-rated man's current deal at the Stadium of Light is set to expire next month, and, despite the fact that Lee Johnson has offered the 26-year-old a new contract, he is yet to put pen to paper with League One side.

Rowett must move

While Sunderland's season ultimately ended in disappointment, with the Black Cats failing to overcome Lincoln City in the play-off semi-final, O'Nien was undoubtedly one of the club's brightest sparks in their 2020/21 campaign.

Over his 40 League One appearances this term, the £4k-per-week midfielder was often played in defence, either at right or centre-back, and helped his side to keep 13 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.3 tackles and 2.8 clearances per game.

The 26-year-old also put in solid numbers going forwards, scoring two goals and creating three big chances, in addition to making an average of 0.6 key passes per game.

These returns saw O'Nien earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.10, ranking him as Sunderland's fourth-best performer in the third tier.

As such, it is evident that the former Watford man would be an extremely good option for Gary Rowett in a number of different positions across the pitch, something that would undoubtedly come in handy for the 47-year-old over the course of a long and arduous Championship campaign.

Furthermore, with the possibility of signing the man Jack Ross dubbed a "revelation" for no fee whatsoever, a deal for the midfielder would also be extremely kind on Millwall's finances.

As such, Rowett should be doing all he can to convince the 26-year-old of a move to The Den at his earliest possible opportunity this summer, or else one of the Lions' Championship rivals will undoubtedly snap the Sunderland star up.
