Ex-Arsenal and Manchester City full back Bacary Sagna has signed for Major League Soccer club Montreal Impact for a further season.
The Frenchman penned a short-term deal with the Impact in the summer with the team struggling in the league and his arrival saw an upturn in the Canadian outfit’s fortunes, as they piled up the points to just miss out on a play-off place on the final day of the season.
Montreal have now taken up the option to re-sign the former Premier League defender to ensure that he will be staying in their ranks until the end of 2019.
Sagna commented: “I enjoyed the back end of the 2018 season, the team started going in the right direction and we can certainly build on that in 2019.
“The MLS represents its own unique challenges to any player with the different playing surfaces and the sometimes long road trips to away games but it is something I have embraced and enjoyed. It is a league that is growing in global popularity and it is very competitive.
“Ahead of the new season, I feel sharp, my fitness is good and I will be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. I am as hungry as I have been to win football matches, that desire has never left me.
“I’m really looking forward to the new season and I’m sure that all of us at Montreal are going to have a successful season.”
