In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 278 appearances during his career, has backed Newcastle United to hand Jacob Murphy a new contract after impressing this season.

Murphy has played as a right wing-back in the previous four games, with the Magpies going unbeaten in that time, which also saw him score a great goal in the 2-1 win against Burnley.

The winger has recently been linked with a move to Rangers who won their 55th SPFL title this season, however, Steve Bruce has spoken openly about his desire to see Murphy handed a new deal at the club.

Speaking on why Murphy deserves to be given a new contract and how he hopes Newcastle don't hesitate in giving him a new deal, Howey told FFC:

"He scored a great goal against Burnley and I think he deserves a new contract, but I think it's not fair in some ways when players want to sign a new contract but they don't feel like the club want them to.

"Players might start to think that I'll just leave on a free because a club has messed them about and players want to have that little bit of extra security in their careers."

The £25,000 per week winger has one year left on his current deal which he signed under Rafa Benitez in 2017, when he joined Newcastle for £10 million from Norwich City.

Murphy has been out on loan twice but this season has seen him score and assist three times this season for the Magpies, and it appears that Bruce has found a spot for him in the team.
