In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey wants Toon fans to be careful what they wish for regarding a takeover of the club, amid a fresh twist emerging that Mike Ashley is expected to win his legal battle with the Premier League.

It has been almost a year since Ashley accepted an offer for Newcastle United from Amanda Staveley's consortium, however the Sports Direct tycoon is still the club's owner.

Both Ashley and the Premier League are in a legal battle regarding how the club's potential new owners were treated during the Owners and Directors tests last year, although the latest reports suggest that he could be victorious later this year.

Speaking on why Newcastle fans must be careful what they wish for and how Ashley has actually made Newcastle a stable club, Howey told FFC:

"I think sometimes you've got to be very careful what you wish for and I know it hasn't quite gone to plan for Mike, but the club is relatively stable.

"We've seen so many clubs in the past get a new owner and all of a sudden it goes completely and utterly wrong, so you've just got to be wary about what you get."

Since Ashley accepted PCP Capital Partners' bid for the club, Burnley have changed ownership with their owners passing their respective tests only to reveal they were in debt almost immediately.

Newcastle United currently sit nine points clear of the relegation zone, which will please Ashley as relegation would surely knock off a significant amount of his valuation for the club.
