In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Newcastle United Hall of Famer Rob Lee believes Joe Cole just doesn't understand the Magpies and how the fanbase feels towards Steve Bruce and the club.

After Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last Friday night, Cole claimed that if the Magpies were in this situation and needed a new manager, he would be at the top of the list for who the fans and club would want to come in.

Lee admitted that he didn't agree with what Cole said and put it down to the former Chelsea winger just not understanding the mood on Tyneside, with the Magpies legend understanding Bruce would never have been a great appointment amongst the fans.

Speaking on Cole's controversial comments and what he believes the former Villa man actually meant, Lee told FFC exclusively:

"I don't agree with everything Joe says but I think what he meant was that if you're in this situation at the bottom of the league [you go for someone like Bruce]. I think he just doesn't understand Newcastle.

"If you're in this sort of situation, where you're bottom of the league, you usually go for an experienced manager. I think that's what he was getting at, not the fact that they should bring Steve Bruce in.

"You don't go for a young manager coming through, you go for experience usually. I think that's what he meant."

Since arriving in 2019, Bruce has been trying to win over the Newcastle fans who saw his appointment as less than inspiring.

With just 10 games left in the Premier League, Newcastle find themselves one place above the relegation zone as they prepare for their game against fellow relegation rivals Brighton tomorrow.
