Newcastle: Callum Wilson targeting return date

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson regarding his injury situation…

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, the Magpies centre-forward has set himself a return date of the clash with Norwich City on 23 April.

The report claimed that he is eyeing the match against the Canaries at Carrow Road as the game in which he will make his long-awaited comeback from his calf issue, having been out of action since the draw with Manchester United in December.

Who would you rather have upfront?

This update will surely leave Eddie Howe ecstatic, as it suggests that he will have Wilson back and available at the business end of the campaign.

The striker’s return will be a major boost, as he has proven himself to be a reliable goalscorer at Premier League level for the Magpies. He has netted six goals in 14 starts this term and still leads the charts at St James’ Park in that respect despite his last appearance coming in December.

Last season, Wilson found the back of the net 12 times in 23 starts – four more goals than any other player managed for the Toon. This highlights how much the club have relied on him for goals over the last 18 months and why having him back will bring a big lift to the squad.

His return would also allow Howe to change up his formation. Wilson can play alongside Chris Wood in a 4-4-2 and allow Newcastle to be on the front foot and attack teams from the off with an ambitious, progressive formation which would allow them to put pressure on the opposition.

Who scored more goals for Newcastle? An easy one to start...

Wood can offer the physical presence, with a whopping 8.6 aerial battles won per game, and use his power to hold up the ball and win flick-ons. Wilson will then be able to make runs in behind off the former Burnley man’s flicks to cause problems around the back of the opposition, who would have to deal with a threat on the deck and in the air.

Therefore, Howe will be ecstatic if Wilson returns against Norwich and is available for the final four matches of the campaign after that clash. The manager can either pick the former Bournemouth predator as the frontman in the 4-3-3 which has been used of late or opt to switch it up – potentially in anticipation of the 2022/23 campaign – and trial the 4-4-2.
