Newcastle United's pursuit of their first major domestic trophy since 1955 will continue after they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United in the League Cup final.

The Red Devils took the lead in the 33rd minute as Casemiro did brilliantly to beat Fabian Schar to the ball from a Luke Shaw delivery to head past Loris Karius.

Marcus Rashford then forced in a second in the 39th minute as his deflected effort from the left corner of the box looped up off Sven Botman and over Karius into the roof of the net, with the strike going down as an own goal for the Dutchman.

Eddie Howe's men rarely threatened David De Gea in United's goal and failed to create any clear-cut openings to get themselves back into the match.

On a disappointing day for Newcastle in the end, one player who let the manager down badly was left-back Dan Burn as he struggled throughout the game.

How did Dan Burn perform against Manchester United?

The former Brighton man was underwhelming on both sides of the game and did not do enough to help the Magpies fight their way back into the contest.

Out of possession, the 6 foot 6 Englishman lost ten of his 13 individual duels - including two of his three in the air - and was dribbled past a whopping four times, whilst only making two tackles and two clearances - as per Sofascore.

These statistics show that the defender was dominated by Manchester United's forward players, on the deck and in the air, as Antony, in particular, gave him the runaround.

Burn's performance also left a lot to be desired on the ball. As per Sofascore, the 30-year-old failed with both of his attempted dribbles and did not create a single chance for his teammates.

He did not provide any attacking threat for Newcastle down the left flank to support Allan Saint-Maximin and that made his weak defending all the more disappointing, as it meant that he was a liability for the club at both ends of the pitch.

It was a huge shame for the local lad and an experience that he deserved to have after playing five times in the competition in the build-up to the final but the dud was unable to make the step up to playing in such a gigantic match.

The £35k-per-week defender was worse than the scorer of the own goal, Botman, as his Dutch teammate did also win five of his six aerial battles and completed ten of his 15 long pass attempts - earning a Sofascore rating of 6.6.

Burn, meanwhile, was given a woeful rating of 5.7 for his display and his woeful statistics, both in and out of possession, back it up, which suggests that the ex-Lille man was the better of the two defenders, despite putting the ball into his own net.
