Newcastle: Craig Hope delivers early team news for Fulham clash

An injury update has emerged on several members of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United squad ahead of a return to Premier League action this weekend…

What’s the latest?

The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has delivered some early team news ahead of the clash with Fulham by revealing that Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson are set to be in the squad after recovering from their respective knocks.

He Tweeted: “Finally, for Newcastle, some good news re injuries. Understand Callum Wilson & Bruno will be fine for Fulham & Allan Saint-Maximin has chance of bench. Elliot Anderson (hamstring) trained today & Jonjo Shelvey (hamstring) has made excellent progress & is nearing return.”

The reporter added that Shelvey may not be fit enough to play on Saturday but could return earlier than expected after being ruled out for up to 12 weeks back in August.

Howe should be delighted

Newcastle’s head coach should be delighted with this news as having Wilson and Guimaraes available for the starting XI is a big boost to the team.

The former’s availability is particularly important as Chris Wood and Alexander Isak are both major doubts for the game after picking up injuries whilst on international duty for their respective nations.

Their knocks have left Wilson as the only fit number nine in the squad and that is why Howe should be rather pleased with his return for the match against Fulham.

The English striker has scored two goals in three Premier League games this season, after managing eight in 16 starts last term, and this shows that he has the potential to be a match-winner for the Magpies.

How many 2021/22 Premier League goals did Newcastle score?

Guimaraes, meanwhile, will come back in as a big boost to the midfield. Only Joelinton (7.20) has averaged a higher SofaScore rating than the former Lyon man (7.08) in the top-flight this term out of the club’s options in the middle of the park, whilst no player in that position averaged a higher rating than he managed last season (7.25).

This indicates that he provides a consistent level of performance that the likes of Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff are unable to match on the pitch, which is why having him available will delight the manager.

Howe will also be elated by the prospect of Saint-Maximin being on the bench as he could be used as an impact substitute. The Frenchman has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.53 (the highest in the squad) this season, with one goal and two assists in four appearances, and has the quality to be a difference-maker in the final third with his ability in the opposition third.
