Newcastle: Kieran Trippier is back in training

Newcastle United have been handed a big injury lift over Kieran Trippier this week…

What’s the latest?

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has provided a promising update on the England international’s recovery from injury, with the defender returning to training in the last few days.

He has been out with a foot injury since the 1-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa on 13 February but is now closing in on his comeback.

Newcastle World journalist Jordan Cronin tweeted: “Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson are ‘edging closer’ says Eddie Howe.

” ‘I don’t think they’ll be ready for this week but Kieran, we’ve seen on the grass and has trained with us one session. Callum’s edging closer and doing a lot of work with the sports science team.’ ”

Supporters will be elated

Newcastle supporters will surely be feeling elated by this news, as Trippier being back in training is a major boost for the club.

Was Trippier the best signing of January?

It seems unlikely that the 31-year-old will be available for selection against Liverpool on Saturday after only completing one session at Darsley Park, as Howe mentioned, but it shows that he is on the right track. There is no need for the Magpies boss to risk him against Jurgen Klopp’s men, as he will need to build up his fitness before getting back to his best.

This means that the clash with Manchester City next week is a more realistic target for Trippier to make his return, potentially playing against his former club. If he can complete a full week of training ahead of the match against the Premier League leaders, then it would be worth giving him some minutes off the bench, or even from the start if Howe decides that he is fit enough to do so.

Who cost Newcastle the most?

Fans will be buzzing to see the ex-Spurs defender back in action as he has shown that he can be a crucial player for the Toon. In his four Premier League appearances for the Magpies so far, he has averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 7.67 and scored two goals from right-back.

He has also made a whopping 3.5 tackles and 2.5 interceptions per game, whilst winning 67% of his duels, proving that he can make an impact at both ends of the pitch for Howe.

Trippier is a solid defender who also carries an attacking threat, and Newcastle supporters may want to see him standing over a free-kick on the edge of the box again as soon as possible, which is why they will be delighted with this latest update from the manager.

AND in other news, Newcastle plotting move for £4.2m “under the radar” gem, he’d be brilliant for Howe…
